Art & Design Level 3 Foundation Diploma at Hull College Group

Course description

Most successful Artists and Designers will state that the Foundation Course was their most valuable training experience.  Our course will provide students with an intensive Art & Design course experience in preparation for a career in Art & Design.

Students will acquire and develop a breadth of new skills, confidence and awareness. The sampling of four specialist pathway options from our well-equipped and professionally staffed list of eight disciplines, enables students to identify the career path that best suits their creative personality.

We organise several off site field trips including a 3 day residential visit to London.

Course content

  • Drawing and mixed media studio practice.
  • Printmaking and Photography
  • Design. Graphics, Textiles, Fashion and 3D.
  • Fine Art, Illustration and Ceramics.
  • Critical and Theoretical studies and Art and Design History

All students will partake in all of the elements of the Study Programme which include:

  • Vocational Studies
  • English and Maths*
  • Additional learning goals
  • Individual learner reviews
  • Work experience
  • Directed Personal Study

Additional vocational work will be set for students to work on in studios as Directed Personal study, outside of the above timetabled sessions. Hours per week for this Study programme are between 16hrs and 30hrs.

Each student has an Individual Study programme package dependant on previous qualification achievements.

* Dependant on previous qualifications, Maths and English are mandatory requirements for all students who have not achieved Grade C or above in GCSE.


Entry requirements

4 GCSEs Grades A-C and one A Level or Level 3 National Diploma. A portfolio of Art and Design work is essential to demonstrate applicant interest and suitability.

Future opportunities

Students will naturally go into Art & Design subject areas and Higher Education Programmes. 

Occasionally design students are recruited directly into the industry.

The College is also fortunate to have an active Student Union which hosts an annual ‘Freshers’ Fair’ for students at the beginning of the Autumn term and organises social events throughout the year.
