Clinical Healthcare Support Level 3 Apprenticeship at Vocational Training Services Care Sector Limited

Course description

This Apprenticeship framework aims to provide the skills and knowledge required to become competent in supporting Health Professionals to provide clinical healthcare.

You may be a Clinical Healthcare Support Worker or a Healthcare Assistant. These roles provide vital assistance to doctors, nurses and allied health professionals in
diagnosing, treating and caring for patients. You may be working in clinical services, eg medical, surgical, critical care, outpatients, community and A&E, and look after the well-being and comfort of patients.

Course content

You’ll need to complete a combination of mandatory and optional units to achieve the whole qualification. Your VTS assessor/tutor will explain this in full. Mandatory units include:

Promote communication in Health, social care or children and young people’s settings
Engage in personal development in health, social care or children and young peoples’ settings
Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children and young people’s settings
Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children and young people’s settings
Promote person centred approaches in health and social care

Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care
Promote good practise in handling information in health and social care settings
Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
The role of the health and social care worker
The principles of infection prevention and control
Causes and spread of infection
Cleaning, decontamination and waste management

Entry requirements

You should be educated to level 2, and ideally be working over 30 hours per week. You must have basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills on which the apprenticeship will build, and at level 3 you need to be working in a supervisory position. You must also have the potential and opportunity to gain evidence for the qualification in the workplace.

VTS will carry out an initial assessment/interview to verify that this is an appropriate programme for you. We will ensure that you have a fair opportunity to demonstrate your ability, and we’ll recognise your prior qualifications and experience.


Assessment will take place by regular observation in the workplace. Additional assessment will be through portfolio building of assignments, case studies, observation and work activities.

Future opportunities

Learners may progress on to further qualifications specific to their work context, subject to availability. To become a qualified practitioner (eg nurse or other allied health
practitioner) apprentices would have to undertake a specific qualification, often a 3 year university degree.
