Design & Technology (Product Design 3D Design) AS/A Level 3 at The John Wallis Church of England Academy

Course description

AS: At AS Level, students will develop an understanding of a range of materials, with an emphasis on the life cycle of products, manufacture and final disposal. They will also consider the broader issues of the designer, including sustainability and safety issues.
A2: At A2 Level, students will be offered the opportunity to develop further the knowledge and skills gained from AS. They will continue to complete coursework alongside the understanding about processes and procedures of manufacturing production on a commercial level.
All areas of work will include Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM).

Two units that are worked on throughout the year.
Unit 1 – Written exam: 2hours = 50% of total AS/25% of A level mark.
Unit 2 – Coursework and Design portfolio, Approx 50 hours = 50% of total AS/25% of A level mark.
A2: Two units that are worked on throughout the year.
Unit 3 – Written exam : 2hours = 25% of A level mark
Unit 4 - Coursework and Design folder, Approx 60 hours = 25% of A level mark


Entry requirements

C grade and above, in D&T and ICT GCSE.

Future opportunities

Completion of this course can lead to opportunities in all areas of product design in industry, including automotive design or engineering design. It could take you into areas of Architecture, manufacturing or advertising. It is also a good grounding for continued study at University. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as Art and Design or Computing to prepare for higher education in areas of and design, technology, architecture or more general higher education courses.

With further training, you could go into a job related to design and technology such as an Architect, Carpenter or Computer Technician. The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
