Course description

The course is an exciting combination of practical and theory work, both of which will provide you with the skills to enter any aspect of the industry. The course can also lead to degree level study or a career in an entry level management position. The course content offers a professional level of knowledge and understanding of modern horticulture.

• Horticulture

• Landscaping  

 

Course content

Horticulture

• Plant and soil science • Plant identification and propagation • Amenity turf • Machinery maintenance • Estate skills • Site surveys and garden design • Construction of timber features and horizontal surfaces • English and maths provision where applicable

 

Landscaping

• Construction of timber features, walls and horizontal surfaces • Plant and soil science • Site surveys • Construct and maintain decorative landscape features • English and maths provision where applicable  

 

 

Entry requirements

Level 3 Study Programmes:

Usually at least 4 GCSEs at grade C or above to include any 2 from English, Maths (ne GCSE grading levels 4 to 9) and Science with at least a grade D in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 2 vocational qualification (Merit or above) with English and Maths at Level 2.

Future opportunities

Further study:

Higher education qualifications such as Foundation Degrees in Horticulture, Landscape and Garden Management, Sports Surface Management or Arboriculture, and, if you’re successful, then on to a ‘top up’ BSc Hons Degree in Applied Horticulture.

Careers:

Entry/lower level management position in gardens, open spaces, production and sports surface management positions.
