Music at Burntwood School

Course description

Both AS and A2 available via EDEXCEL

Course content

The AS/A2 program is made up of an AS level consisting of 3 units followed by the A2 level with a further 3 units. Designed to advance a variety of musical skills including performing, composition, analysis and listening.

Your composition skills will be developed to a greater level of complexity and will include more understanding of scoring and instrumental details.

Listening will further develop your aural and interpretative skills.

In A2 you will have the opportunity to specialize in a variety of more complex genres and either give a performance recital or compile a composition portfolio.

During the course you will develop your music leadership skills through orchestra, choirs, instrumental groups, rehearsing sections and conducting recorder ensembles.

Entry requirements

5 A* to C grade passes at GCSE level with an A or above in Music or alternatively, Grade 6 (ABRSM) on an instrument.


You will be required to perform at Grade 7 standard during AS and Grade 8 during A2.

There is a wide range of opportunities for students with A Level Music; Performance, Multi-Arts and University Courses, Music Technology, Recording, TV/ Radio Broadcasting and Internet posts.

Your portfolio of compositions/performances, ensemble leadership and conducting will be invaluable for entry to a range of work e.g. music studios, publishing, stores, and organisational work such as concert administrator.

A Level Music is highly regarded and valued by all Universities including Oxford and Cambridge.
