Physics - AS/A2 Level at Bolton St Catherine's Academy
Whilst studying Physics you will develop skills similar to those required of any professional in any other field i.e. time management, research, and presenting. Physics is essential in understanding space and the physical world. Careers in physics are as diverse as engineering to being an astronaut.
1st year; Core physics of mechanics, waves and electrical circuits, quantum physics.
2nd year Newton’s theories of gravity, motion and thermal physics, new frontiers of physics - field theory, nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and medical imaging.
A level Physics requires higher than the standard entry requirements. You will be expected to have at least two GCSEs at level 6 and three GCSEs at level 5 including English Language at level 5 points.
If you studied Core and Additional Science, you will be expected to have level 6 in Mathematics’ (higher grade tier) and a double 6 in Science. If you studied separate science, you will need GCSE level 6 points in Mathematics, GCSE level 6 in Physics and a level 6 from Biology or Chemistry
Assessment is by written examinations which will assess the knowledge and understanding from the course and the practical skills acquired throughout.
Studying physics can lead to careers in designing aeroplanes, vehicles, buildings, or even robots. Alternatively, you may consider a career in space exploration or researching into new materials and products for the future. Having A Level physics will also open up possibilities In diverse fields such as medicine, optometry, dentistry, geology, chemistry, biology and biomedical sciences.
