English - GCSE, ESOL, Functional Skills at Longley Park Sixth Form College

Course description

We offer several courses leading to qualifications in English.  We will complete a diagnostic assessment with you to find out which course will be most suitable for your needs.  If English is not your first language we can tailor the course to help you develop your understanding and confidence.

Course content

Our English courses will help you improve your skills in punctuation, spelling and grammar. The GCSE English Language course involves the study of both fiction and non-fiction, texts from different cultures, creative writing and spoken language. You will also learn to analyse the different techniques used in different forms of writing. The course will also help you to improve your independent study skills. Our Functional Skills and ESOL courses are assessed across three units - Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. We will work with you to develop your skills in these areas and support you to progress onto the GCSE course.

Entry requirements

To study GCSE in one year you will need a grade D/3 at GCSE.  If you do not have a grade D/3 you may need to take the GCSE over two years.  Our initial assessment will help us to identify the best course for you.

These courses are all assessed by examination.
