Environmental and Land-Based Science - GCSE at Merrill Academy
GCSE Environmental and Land Based Science can be taught as a stand-alone qualification. This course is a new, exciting and inspiring qualification. You will gain knowledge and experience and begin to explore the skills needed to build a career in the sector. The units that make up the qualification provide opportunities for you to learn about many areas - from conservation of species to nutritional, growth, breeding and handling of plants and animals, in addition to the ways in which we use the land for the production of food.
The GCSE consists of three units:
Unit B681: Management of the Natural Environment
This will be assessed through a one hour modular examination which will account for 20% of your GCSE grade. This unit focuses upon environmental issues and relationship of the soil to the animals and plants it supports; human activities and energy requirements and the effects upon the environment.
Unit B682: Plant Cultivation and Small Animal Care
This will be assessed through a one hour modular examination which will account for 20% of your GCSE grade. This unit focuses upon issues relating to the care and maintenance of plants and small animals in the home, the garden and at school.
Unit B684: Environmental and Land-Based Science Controlled Assessment portfolio
These will be a series of controlled assessments with specific requirements for setting and marking your tasks.
Written Examination: 40%
Environmental and Land Based Portfolio: 60%
You could take up many career opportunities after completing this course including working in Countryside Management, Estate Work, Conservation and Education.
Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress to BTEC L3 Countryside Management courses. You must also have completed GCSE Maths, English & Science at grade C.
