Course description

Religious Studies at AS and A2 level is an exciting and dynamic subject which is suitable for students to study whether they are from a religious or a non- religious background. Students are given the choice of studying two modules from Philosophy of Religion, Islam or Ethics.

Course content

The specifications are designed to enable candidates to:* develop an interest in and enthusiasm for a rigorous study of religion;* treat the subject as an academic discipline by developing knowledge andunderstanding appropriate to a specialist study of religion;* use an enquiring, critical and empathetic approach to the study of religion. Students with AS or A2 level Religious Studies are trained to think critically, to analyse, evaluate and communicate.

These skills are in high demand by Higher Education and employers. Religious Studies is a desirable A level for all Arts courses in Higher Education, as well as courses in medicine or medical research. Past students have taken a wide variety of degree courses including topics such as: Philosophy, English, History, Performing Arts, and Accountancy to name a few. So the course is flexible and open to many exciting career opportunities

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in Full Course GCSE Religious Studies.  Grade B or above for Short Course Religious Studies.


Year One - AS Unit 1 Philosophy of Religion: Plato and the analogy of the cave; Plato -the Concepts of Forms; The Form of Good; Aristotle - ideas of cause and purpose. Judeo-Christian influences on Philosophy of Religion; Concept of God as creator and goodness of God. Arguments for Existence of God; Moral Argument; Problem of Evil; Religion and Science Or Islam: Life and Society in Pre-Islamic Arabia, Muhammad (pbuh) as the final messenger of Allah, Beliefs about Allah and Human relationships, The Qur'an, The Five Pillars of Islam, Surahs 1 and 96 50% of AS Unit 2 Ethics: Applied Ethics; Ethical theories; Religious ethics relating to medical ethics: Abortion, Euthanasia, Genetics, War & Peace. 50% of AS
