Automotive Engineering IMI Advanced Diploma Level 3 at Fareham College

Course description

This qualification is the final step towards becoming a qualified mechanic with the Level 3 technical certification, opening doors to a range of employment opportunities in the industry.

The course also involves topics such as materials fabrication and job roles in the automotive work environment. You will study both the theory and practical aspects of light vehicle maintenance including health and safety and other skills associated with working in a garage or main dealership.

Course content

The course units cover all the skills and knowledge required to:

  • Diagnose and rectify vehicle engine system and component faults

  • Inspect vehicles

  • Diagnose and rectify vehicle chassis systems and component faults

  • Diagnose and rectify auxiliary equipment electrical faults

  • Diagnose and rectify transmission faults


Entry requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English.
  • Students must have a Level 2 qualification in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and pass an entrance examination.

Financial information

Students will be required to purchase and wear overalls, steel toe cap safety shoes and safety glasses. A list of professional clothing will be supplied at your application interview.

Future opportunities

Students completing this course will have broad skills and knowledge about motor vehicles and could gain employment in a garage, in accident repair or with a vehicle and parts retailer.

Those looking to further their knowledge could study a HNC or HND while in an Apprenticeship scheme.
