Course description

Media is and will continue to be one of the main driving forces in society. Media Studies can equip you with the knowledge to understand how the media helps shape our World & its influence on groups & individuals. You will gain both analytical & creative skills whilst completing the course.

Course content

Paper 1: Media Issues and Debates-Exam (2 hours) - 35% of grade

The exam is split into three sections consisting of a mixture of short and longer response questions, including an argument. A topic will be released in advance of the exam and students will be expected to explore relevant key concepts to explore ideas in the paper.

Paper 2: Analysis of Media Products – Exam (2 hours) – 35% of grade

Over the course of the 2 years, students will explore a number of Close Study Products (CSPs) provided by AQA across a range of media platforms. They will use these products to answer a variety of questions on the paper that will test their breadth and depth of knowledge of the theoretical framework and the contexts in which the products were created.

Creating a Media Product (Coursework) 30% of total grade

Students will create a media product based on a choice of topics related to the over-arching topic that is decided by AQA. This is changed every year. Students will be required to produce cross-media texts for an intended audience alongside a statement of intent. This unit assesses the students practical & creative skills & replaces the traditional coursework element of the legacy specification.

5x A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent)

Grade C in GCSE Media Studies (If taken)
