Sport and Active Leisure CYQ Level 1 Diploma at Bedford College

Course description

This course will develop the personal skills and qualities you will need for learning and working within sport and leisure. You will take part in a wide range of sporting activities, as well as learning about the healthy body and starting work in the industry. Successful completion of this course will give you access to the Level 2 Diploma in Sport. Full access to the Colleges successful sport academies, which offer top training in a range of different sports, including football, rugby, basketball and more.

Course content

During the course you will study a range of topics, including how the body works, improving own fitness and organising and assisting an event.

The course will consist of the following units:

  • Fitness for sport
  • Practical sports performance
  • The mind and sports performance
  • The sports performer in action
  • Training for personal fitness
  • Leading sports activities
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Lifestyle and well-being
  • Injury and the sports performer
  • Running a sports event
  • Carrying out a sports-related Project
  • Designing exercise programmes
  • Work experience in sport
  • Functional Skills in English
  • Functional Skills in Maths.


You will also be given the opportunity to go on a range of trips, including scuba-diving, skiing, snowboarding, paintballing, camping, a football tour, a basketball tour or a rugby tour. At the end of June you will be invited to attend the Sports department Oscars awards evening to celebrate successes from the course.

Entry requirements

To begin this course you will need a genuine interest in sport and recreation. Some evidence of studying at GCSE level or successful completion of an Entry Level qualification would be an advantage.


All BTEC work will be assessed through assignments, which can consist of written essays, presentations, group discussion, practical observation and poster production. Both functional skills will be assessed through formal exams.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress on to a higher level of study in a related subject, such as Sport Level  or Public Service2, Outdoor Education Level 2s Level 2.

Further information

To take part in this course there will be an additional fee of approximately £30 for required clothing. You will need to spend £50 to attend trips that will complement your course.
