Certificate in Child Care and Education at Vandyke Upper School and Community College
This course is designed for those students who want to work with children in early years settings. It is split into three stages; Award, Certificate and Diploma.
The Award comprises of two units;
An Introduction to Working with Children
The Developing Child
The Certificate comprises of the above two units and;
Safe, Healthy and Nurturing Environments for Children
Children and Play
Communication and Professional skills within Child Care and Education
The Diploma all of the above and;
The Child Care Practitioner in the Workplace
Working with Children from Birth to Age 5 years.
It is expected that most students will progress through the Award and Certificate to complete the Diploma in order to be able to practice as an early years practitioner (in a supervised role) or progress onto advanced courses (see below for further details).
A minimum of 2 GCSEs at D.
Coursework is carried out in lessons, home and work experience
Units 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7 have assessment tasks set by the awarding body.
Assessments tasks vary in presentation and word limits depending on the nature of the work.
Unit 6 has a practical, vocational practice based assessment.
Unit 3 is assessed by a multiple choice question paper.
There are many opportunities following successful completion of this course including:
Work in a supervised role in child care settings, for example, nursery assistant, pre-school assistant, crche assistant, parent/toddler group assistant, playgroup assistant.
Further studies (depending on grades achieved) such as, GCE in A level Health and Social Care (offered at Vandyke school)
Level 3 Award/Certificate/Diploma Child Care Course (application needed to a college of further education)
The Diploma Stage is equivalent to 5 GCSEs A* to C.
