Photography, Level 3 Extended Diploma at Abingdon and Witney College
This course will provide the opportunity to experiment with a variety of different cameras and lighting techniques and modules will allow for students to experiment with film making and production. You will also develop your contextual knowledge by exploring a wide range of contemporary and historical photographers, informing your own work. Tutors with a wealth of industry experience will support you in developing your creative thinking and push the boundaries of your own learning. Dedication, hard work and motivation are essential to succeed on this new, exciting and dynamic programme.
The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Photography is made up of 12 mandatory and two optional units. Mandatory units include an introduction to visual language in photography, research skills in art, design and photography, an introduction to materials, processes and technical skills and preparing for progression within photography. During the last part of your second year you will be working on a final major project. The work produced from these units will then go into a professionally produced end-of-year exhibition.
Throughout the course you will receive specialist advice and tutor support on portfolio presentation and preparation for University and job interviews.
Assessment is based purely on coursework and there no exams at all within the programme. Over the two year course you will study 13 units and work may be re-submitted once in order to improve your grades as the course progresses. The Art and Design department have been invited to join the prestigious UAL (University of the Arts London) examining board. This means that all of our Art and Design qualifications will be awarded certified by UAL. Advantages to this include a guaranteed interview in to any of the London UAL University Colleges after completion of the Level 3 qualification and the opportunity to exhibit Final Major Project work at Chelsea College of Art at the end of the academic year.
There will be regular trips to galleries and museums around the country and visits by artists, designer and former students. Students will also visit Oxford Bus Museum, Southsea and the U CAS Design Your Future Excel Centre, London, as well as London Art Galleries. Two study trips are integrated in to the year: an initial four day visit in September followed by a week-long stay in February. Recent destinations have included Berlin, Venice, B arcelona, Beijing, Istanbul and Marrakech.
You will need to have 5 qualifications from Functional Skills Level 2 and GCSEs at grade C or above (with one of these being an Art & Design related subject at grade B or above) OR Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design, Media, Creative Technologies, IT or Backstage Production at Merit or above. You will also be required to provide a written personal statement, a positive reference and to attend a formal interview with a traditional or digital portfolio of visual work.
