Kickstart + Study Programme - Work Experience at BCTG
St Thomas's Community Network is a learning centre with a brief to develop education, training and social engagement activities. Our courses range from ICT, ESOL, English, Maths, Hairdressing, cooking, creative craft etc. As an organisation operating for 25 years we have experience, knowledge and understanding of working with the most vulnerable groups such as young ofenders, care and care leavers, teenage parents, those who are affected by substance misuse, homeless etc. On site we have full day care nursery and after school club provision that our learners have access to and a furniture store to support those in need. We feel we are able to offer a diverse learning programme that meets the individual needs of our learners.
Learners would have access to 4 computer suites, mobile computer facilities, (to include ICT, computer art and web design), recording studio, hairdressing salon, community cafe, outdoor multi use games as well as a hall for indoor sports and workshops.
The Kickstart + Study Programme is a 40 week programme designed to help young people aged 16-18 prepare for apprenticeships, further training or employment. Through a tailored programme, learners are given the chance to take part in a range of activities which will help prepare for their future by gaining skills and qualifications. The programme is open to both males and females from the local community and surrounding areas. Needs of the community will be met by delivering within a small, non threatening environment based in a community centre where we can adapt for our learners needs.
The opportunity to ahcieve essential qualifications such as a Certificate in Employability Skills and Functional Skills English & Maths forms only part of the programme as the main focus is work experience/tasters in the sector of the learners own choice. With many employers beiieving work experience is becoming more important, the work placement element of the progrramme allows learners to develop their skills in a variety of vocational areas. Many of the learners who have attended St Thomas' Community ~Network in the past have been a little unsure of what career path to take or think they may be interested in a particularl area. This programme gives learners the chance to experience what the sector/industry is about and the responsibilities involved which helps the learner to decide if that is the career choice for them. St Thomas' will then support the learner with the next steps to take towards their career goal.
Any interested learners will be invited to St Thomas' for an interview and undertake initial assessments to see if any additional support is required which St Thomas' may be able to help with. This included Maths and English. When learners join the programme St Thomas' staff will support each individual to set realistic goals and targets, along with a learning plan which will keep the learner on track.
The Certificate in Employability Skills qualification is being offered alongside quality work experience that will be set up by St Thomas. These particular qualification units fit in nicely with going into the work placement and will help the learners for interviews and future job opportunities.
For those who are eligible The Bursary Fund is available to apply for.
Maths & English will also be offered to learners in the form of functional skills qualifications if required. All learners undertake BKSB initial assessments and diagnostics before starting the programme to determine whether they need support with English & Maths. St Thomas' staff are able to deliver training from Entry 3 up to Level 2.
Functional Skills in ICT are also available if the learner requires it.
It is expected that the learners will not be in a work experience placement immediately and will receive training in centre for the first few weeks to get them to the stage of being able to go into a work place. St Thomas' have well equipped classrooms located on the premises of the network. Learners will initially work towards the employability skills certificate, functional skills (if required) receive pastoral support and take part in enrichment activities as part of the preparation for going into a work experience placement.
Alongside the educational side of the programme, St Thomas' Network are able to offer motivational and team building activities such as a 2-3 day residential, The Get Cooking course run through Dudley NHS Primary Care Trust which encourages healthy eating on a budget. Other activities include Sports, Beauty & Nail Art, Hairdressing, Go-Karting and Bowling.
St Thomas' Network also works with a variety of local external agencies and advisory groups, who run workshops which provide learners with up-to-date knowledge and information on a varied curriculum.
When the learners are ready to go on placement, St Thomas' will set up interviews with the learner and employer and support will be given by St Thomas' staff throughout the duration of the placement. The learner will receive 'On the Job Reviews' from St Thomas' staff and the Employer will have the opportunity to attend too.
All learners will receive IAG throughout the programme from tutors/assessors and will receive formal IAG from a level 4 qualified member of staff at the interview and end of programme stages.
When the learner is near to the end of the programme they will sit down with tutors to discuss moving on and progression routes. St Thomas' staff will support and signpost the learner towards their chosen career path.
Work Placement Details - 1 day a week initially but may increase when qualifications are completed depending on the learner and employer. The programme will remain at 4 days per week throughout.
