Art and Design Level 2 Diploma (ADF1) at Barnsley College

Course description

Providing an opportunity for those who are intrigued by art and design to explore.

Develop and test your creativity within a structure that will provide a sound base of skills and knowledge, enhance self-confidence and reveal the potential career demands and opportunities that exist in the sector.

This course encourages you to explore and develop art and design ideas in both 2D and 3D. The work you produce will be shaped by your own research.

Course content

This course encourages you to explore and develop art and design ideas in both 2D and 3D. The work you produce will be shaped by your own research. You will work with a range of media and techniques within the following areas:

•Painting and Drawing

•Graphic Design

•Fashion Design and Textiles

•3D Design and Design Crafts

•Photography

•Visual Arts

Entry requirements

•3 GCSEs grade A*-D plus English Grade 3 or above

•You will normally take part in an interview prior to being enrolled on the programme and are advised to bring a portfolio of work to your interview in order to demonstrate your interests and abilities

•Where applicants do not quite meet the entry requirements, the tutor may use their discretion based on the portfolio and interview

Assessment

You will periodically present your folder of work to your personal tutor for your evaluation record to be updated.  There will also be external testing of selected units, including controlled test elements.

Financial information

Financial support – If you are aged between 16 -18 and your total annual household income is less than £35,000 you could be eligible for financial support through our Learner Support Fund.* Money is available for travel (up to £700), food, trips, printing, equipment and childcare. You don’t have to pay this money back. You can pick up a Learner Support Fund application form from Student Services on the ground floor at our Old Mill Lane campus.

Guaranteed bursaries - If you are aged between 16 and 18 and in receipt of a benefit in your own right, in care or leaving care, or have significant caring responsibilities you could be eligible for a non-repayable bursary of up to £1,200 per year.*

Earn to Learn - If you are in full time education you could get involved with our Earn to Learn scheme. This provides excellent work experience opportunities within College with departments including Marketing, Administration and Catering, and you will be rewarded an equivalent of £5 per hour (£25 per week maximum) through a range of cash payments, high street vouchers and cashless credits which can help with the cost of travel, trips and equipment.

FREE bus services! - We realise that getting to and from College might not be very easy for everyone so we have funded three FREE return bus services for our students. They serve the following areas:

• Shelley

• Stocksbridge via Penistone

• Rotherham - Ecclesfield - Chapeltown - High Green

These bus routes are completely free for our students and operate on a first come, first served basis. Each route will get students into College in a morning before lessons start and a return service is provided after lessons finish. Future opportunities

Employment – This course can form the foundations for a range of creative occupations including Graphic Designer, Concept Artist, Fashion Designer, Pattern Cutter, Gallery/Museum Curator, Illustrator, Art and Design Teacher, Interior Designer, Textile Designer, Photographer and other related roles.

Education – There are a range of other courses onto which you can progress and specialise in your creative interests.
