BTEC DIPLOMA ICT at Peter Symonds College

Course description

The BTEC National is an advanced level vocational IT course which involves the theoretical and practical study of both computer and IT related topics. The course content is equally suited to both male and female students due to its diverse programme of study. The content of the course is a combination of the AS/A2 ICT, Computing and Applied ICT courses. Students can enjoy studying a range of interesting IT related topics and learn a range of different software including the Adobe Software Suite as well as traditional Microsoft Office and programming languages. The course will comprise of students studying 12 different topics, details of 6 of these topics can be found on the course leaflet for the BTEC National Certificate/Subsidiary Diploma in IT.

Topics studied in addition to the Subsidiary Diploma are:

Information Systems: In order to understand and appreciate how organisations use information, it is necessary to appreciate how businesses operate and the functional areas in to which they can be divided. This unit covers these areas as well as exploring the formal ways that internal and external information flows can be represented. It is necessary that students and employees know of the constraints that impact the use of information in organisations. This unit covers such issues including data protection and other legislation.
Software Design and Development: To develop a programmed software solutions, which meets business and user needs, it is necessary to understand the problem and be very clear in terms of the user requirements. Students will develop an appreciation of why different high-level languages are available and why they are chosen in particular situations. This unit provides and introduction to the principles of software design, design tools and how to develop software solutions.

Event driven programming: This unit allows students to become familiar with the underpinning concepts of event driven programming and subsequently to develop particular skills in one language. A variety of languages have the capacity to develop event driven solutions and the focus will be on learning the Visual Basic .Net programming language.

Databases: Most organisations use databases in some way to store records, for example customer information, supplier information, employee details and basic financial information. Students will learn how to manipulate these records where they can be searched, sorted, ordered, and indexed. Also using a simplified chart tool, graphs and charts can also be created and embedded in reports.

Systems Analysis and Design: In this unit students will gain an understanding of the principles and stages involved in systems analysis and the associated documentation involved in both the analysis and design stages. One key stage involves the determination of the requirements and the writing of the requirements specification. Clear statements and understanding of the requirements are essential to ensuring that an appropriate solution is designed. In addition it will provide the basis for later testing and evaluation.

Computer Animation: Animation has become a prominent feature of the worldwide web and is used to create interest and attract attention. In this area, however, there are other factors that need to be taken into account when designing and building applications, such as the nature of the display device and the bandwidth of the connection. As with all computer applications students must first identify the need, specific requirements and constraints before building the solution. Students will start by looking at different types of animation and their uses and formats. The available tools, techniques and software will be examined as well as the special techniques used when animating for the web.

At least 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C, including Maths and English
