Course description

BTEC National Overview: The course consists of three core units plus three specialist units that provide for a combined total of 360 guided learning hours for the completed qualification. Units: Section A - All three units must be taken Unit 1 - The Body in Action Unit 2 - Health and Safety in Sport Unit 3 - Training and Fitness for Sport Section B - Three units must be chosen from: Unit 4 - Sports Coaching** Unit 5 - Sports Development Unit 6 - Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise Unit 7 - Practical Team Sports* Unit 8 - Practical Individual Sports* Unit 9 - Outdoor and Adventurous Activities* Unit 11 - Sport and Society Unit 12 - Leadership in Sport** Unit 13 - Exercise, Health and Lifestyle Unit 23 - Working with Children in Sport Unit 25 - Work-based Experience in Sport Unit 28 - Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure * Only one of these three units may be selected ** Only one of these two units may be selected

Course content

This highly recognised qualification is worth the equivalent of 2 ‘A’ levels. It allows students to study theoretical and practical elements of sport in a more applied and vocational context. Units include fitness and training, the principles of coaching, working with children and contemporary issues in sport.

Entry requirements

Merit at BTEC Level 2in Sport or B at GCSE PE

Assessment

Continuous assessment over two years builds up a portfolio of evidence leading to final certification equivalent of two ‘A’ levels.

Future opportunities

You could take this short course with a related GCE or other qualification to prepare for further education in areas of sport such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport Management or related degree programmes. You could also go on to study an NVQ vocational qualification in Sports Development, which could be work-based. With further training, you could go into a job related to sport such as a Sport Coach, Trainer or Gym Instructor . The course provides a work related programme of study so you could go straight into a job as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for, especially in the sport and exercise sector.
