Travel and Tourism BTEC Diploma Level 3 at Croydon College

Course description

You can choose between a one year or two year course. The one year course, is equivalent to 1/1.5 A levels, you can then progress on to a second year which then is equivalent to 3 A Levels.

This course covers units across a wide and exciting range of specialisms and you will learn skills which you can then put directly into action. The dynamic teaching team has excellent links with both large and local small employers and part of your learning will be engaging with them.

During this course, you will develop a range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for today’s rapidly expanding world of Travel and Tourism. This course consists of a core of subjects to provide you with an in-depth understanding of the Travel industry, and a large number of specialist subject areas. You will develop both general and specialist management skills essential for working within the Travel industry.

Examples of the topics you may study are:

  • The UK aviation industry

  • Health, safety and security in the aviation industry

  • On-board passenger operations

  • Customer service in the aviation industry

  • Aviation communication

  • Investigating the travel and tourism sector and cruise industry

  • Specialist tourism

  • Working as a holiday representative

  • Events, conferences and exhibitions

  • UK visitor attractions

You will also have the opportunity to achieve an additional L2 NCFE Cabin Crew qualification. This is a Nationally recognised qualification and provides you with the knowledge required to become a member of Cabin Crew. As part of this qualification you will get to attend the BA training centre used by BA current trainee pilots and cabin crew to undertake a cabin crew safety training day.

There are a wide range of learning and assessment strategies incorporated into the programme including roleplays, worksheet completion on external visits, peer observations and written reports, and you will be supported by our excellent staff across all the different learning styles.

Your learning experience is designed to stretch you to achieve your best and develop the skills you need for your future career. You will put the skills you learn into practice- getting involved in practical work in small groups, making presentations and completing role plays.

We have fantastic, state of the art resources! You will be taught in well-equipped classrooms, with interactive whiteboards and the latest technology, including class ipads and our virtual learning environment.

We also have a very well equipped library and learning resource centre with plenty of computers for independent study and amazing library facilities.

Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.

It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.

Course content

A key distinguishing feature of Croydon College is our links with employers and the ways in which we bring this into your learning. There is a rich variety of work and employer engagement opportunities provided for you, including a two week placement.

In addition to this there is the opportunity for students to attend various industry related exhibitions and conferences such as the World Travel Market, the Outdoor Adventure Travel show, and also visit attractions such as Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park, Emirates Aviation Experience, London Dungeons and The London Bridge Experience.

After reacting to feedback from current and previous students on the course, we are looking at including a residential study visit to a European destination e.g. Paris, Amsterdam or somewhere in Spain, for the forthcoming academic year.

You will have the opportunity to engage in specially arranged Employability Weeks at the College to help you prepare for your future career and how to get that perfect job. Over 140 employers came into College for the most recent Employability Week to provide mock interviews and a variety of talks. Interserve, Gatwick Airport, Crystal Palace, Marks & Spencer and John Lewis were amongst the employers attending.

You will have access to a wide and rich range of complementary opportunities to enhance your career options while at Croydon College. As well as regular CV, career development and UCAS support sessions from the lecturers and the College Employability Hub, you will also engage in mock interviews and will be encouraged to gain employment experience.

You will be given the chance to attend visits from Universities, visits to University Conventions and University Open Days so you can explore all your options and the College has its own University Centre too, so you’ll also have the opportunity to engage with University Centre students, some of whom provide mentoring.

All the staff who teach you engage in commercial upskilling every year with external companies which keeps their skills up to date and ensures their teaching is current. Lecturers currently delivering the programme have themselves worked within the travel industry and can give you first-hand knowledge of the roles.

The College also has a large student common room with pool tables, electronic games consoles and plenty of space to socialise in between classes.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs grade C or higher, one being English or maths or a related Level 2 vocational course at Merit or higher (if a Pass grade is achieved GCSE grades and/or functional skills results can also be considered).

English and maths assessed at Level 1 or above.

To progress to the second year Extended Diploma qualification you will need to successfully complete the first year of this course and demonstrate good attendance and punctuality at the College.

Assessment

This course is ideal for students who enjoy course work and is particularly attractive to those who prefer modular based learning.

Future opportunities

This course provides thorough preparation for the next stage of your career to enable you to progress with confidence to either further study or employment with training.

You will have the opportunity to advance to Higher Education either at the College’s own University Centre (with courses validated by the University of Sussex) or other top universities of your choice. Previous students have gone on to study various subjects including International Tourism Management, Airline and Airport Management, Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Management and Events Management.

Career opportunities are vast and just as an example Travel and Tourism students who studied with us here at Croydon College are currently working as: a Senior Cabin Crew Member for Easy Jet; Travel Agents in World Choice; a Resort Representative for Thomas Cook; Customer service agents for various London based attractions; receptionists at some of the World’s leading hotels; and working on board cruise ships.

As you can see Travel and Tourism provides a huge variety of employment opportunities and currently statistics show that 3,000,000 people are currently employed in the UK Travel and Tourism Industry alone*.
