Land-Based Studies Level 1 (Outdoor Learning) at Askham Bryan College

Course description

The Level 1 Study Programmes are practically oriented, vocational courses for those with enthusiasm and interest in the programme of study. You will spend as much time as possible outside the classroom with a focus on practical skills.  

Course Programmes: Students will choose one programme (programme options dependent on study centre)

• Animal Care • Environmental Conservation (Leeds and Middlesbrough only) • Horse Care • Horticulture • Agriculture • Sport and leadership



York (All programmes available)

Leeds (Animal Care, Environmental Conservation and Horticulture)

Middlesbrough (Newham Grange Farm) – (A blend of all pathways excluding Sports and Leadership)  

Course content

Course Themes:

• Vocational practical skills (conservation projects, fencing, milking, animal care, stable duties, planting) • Study skills • English and maths • Employability skills - work skills or work placements • Personal effectiveness • Active sport and team building every week • Community projects • Educational, industry and enrichment trips  

Availability of specific practical skills will depend on study choice and resources at the individual centre.

Entry requirements

No formal qualifications required but, an enthusiasm for one or more of the subject areas is essential.


Ongoing through porfolio and assignment work both practical and knowledge based.

    • The Saltaire Centre is in partnership with Shipley College. Situated in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Saltaire. Easy to get to by bus or train from Leeds, Bradford, Ilkley, Keighley, Bingley and Skipton. The Centre currently offers study programmes in Animal Management.
