Public Services BTEC First Diploma at Harrogate College

Course description

This course is for people who are interested in entering one of the public services e.g. Ambulance Service, Fire Service, Armed Forces, Police Force etc.

Course content

Core Units – all 3 must be taken:

• Public Service Skills 
• Employment in the Uniformed Public Services (UPS)
• Career Planning

Specialist Units currently include (please note these can be subject to minor changes each academic year):

• Improving Health and Fitness for Entry in the UPS 
• Adventurous Activities and Teamwork 
• Expedition Skills 
• Land Navigation by Map & Compass

The course also includes a comprehensive enrichment programme, comprising of visits to various UPS organisations, talks by external speakers, Army Bursary opportunities, and other curriculum based trips. Team building and outdoor education are fundamental aspects of the course.

Entry requirements

Will need GCSEs at Grade D or a relevant Level 1 Qualification at merit/distinction. Mature students without relevant qualifications may be accepted onto the course (subject to interview).


All assignments, both written and practical in nature, are by continuous assessment, and count towards your final grade.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Public Services you could apply for our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma course.

Alternatively you may choose to seek employment within the Uniformed Public Services.

Please note this course cannot guarantee that you will secure employment within the uniformed public services.
