Advanced Apprenticeship Children and Young People's Workforce Level 3 Diploma at County Training - Shropshire Council

Course description

This qualification is for experienced staff members working in a supervisory role taking responsibility for the day to day running of a nursery/pre-school setting.

As with the Intermediate Apprenticeship, this course is for those who are passionate about working with children and want to play a part in their social and practical development.  Candidates doing this course could be working with children from birth, right through to 16 year olds.

This course is work-based qualifications, so you will be learning through on-the-job practical training, providing you with the relevant skills and experience in order to continually progress your career.

Who is this course for?

Anyone who is aged 16 and over looking to start or develop a career in childcare. It is likely at this level that you would have supervisory responsibilities or would manage a nursery section.

Course content

Candidates will work towards achieving the following:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Children and Young People's Workforce
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT
  • Paediatric First Aid Course – 12 hours of study
  • City and Guilds Level 2 Award Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Entry requirements

Before you can start this course, you will need to have a relevant paid work placement of at least 30 hours per week. There may be existing placements available or County Training can provide you with support to find a placement. This may be through an interview, some support with writing applications or preparing a CV, or even through work-experience placements.


Coursework and Practical Assessment

Before your course starts you will meet with your manager at work and your assessor to discuss which units of the qualification you will be working towards. These will be based on the kind of job role and day-to-day tasks you will be doing. Your assessor will then visit you on a regular basis to help collect evidence of the skills and knowledge you are gaining through one-to-one discussions, observations at work and witness testimonies from your manager – all of these activities will help you to build a portfolio demonstrating your ability for this area of work.

In addition, there will be a requirement for all participants to attend consecutive workshops as part of the qualification.

Financial information

The cost will be dependent on individual circumstances. There may be funding available to cover training costs.

For 16-18 year olds undertaking an Apprenticeship, training will be fully provided. A contribution of £250/£350 may be required for individuals aged19 and over depending on existing qualifications held.

Future opportunities

Once you have achieved your Advanced Apprenticeship you may wish to study qualifications such as:

  • BTEC HNC/HND in subjects such as Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, or Early Childhood Studies.
  • A degree or foundation degree, for example in Early Years or Early Childhood Studies.

Workshops takes place from 9.30am - 2.30pm on a Thursday at: The Lantern, Meadow Farm Drive, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY1 4NG. All candidates will attend a total of 20 workshops.

Any person currently undertaking a Level 3 Apprenticeship is entitled to access a programme of 6 management courses free! Courses are available in the following areas:

  • Team Leading
