STEM Leadership Internship at Framwellgate School

Overview and context

The STEM Internship Programme is a competive opportunity for sixth form students to complete a one year programme that will run in conjunction with their A Levels. It is aimed at talented and ambitious students who have an interest in following a STEM career, with a focus on leadership within their chosen discipline.

Students will receive the chance to explore opportunities open to them in the area of STEM leadership through completion of a research project, invitations to special lectures and activities, the opportunity to have a mentor from industry to guide and support their learning, and also to complete a placement during the school holidays.

The placement would be tailored to the needs and areas of specialism of the student. This programme will enable students to undertake a unique and valuable opportunity that will enhance their learning.

Content:

All students on the programme will complete the following elements:

AQA Baccalaureate including AS Critical Thinking and the Extended Project.

BTEC Qualification in STEM Leadership.

A work experience placement, with links to industry relevant to the student’s future aspirations and interests.

Mentoring sessions with an Industry partner.

Research opportunities to develop the students understanding of their area of interest.

Specialist events, activities and experiences.

Individually tailored elements to suit individual student requirements and interests.

 

Entry requirements

In order to enrol on sixth form courses, applicants will need to have achieved:

•5 A* to C Grades in separate subjects and in addition

•‘B’ Grade(s) or higher in subject(s) relevant to A Level choices*
•‘C’ Grade(s) or higher in subject(s) relevant to Applied Courses
and also meet the specific criteria for each subject choice.

 

What will you need to do to qualify?

Students who which to be considered for the STEM Leadership Internship will be required to complete an application form, along with a letter of application. They will then be given an interview which will form part of the selection process for the internship.

Students will be expected to be studying subjects appropriate to those required to lead to an application into the area of Medical Sciences so will include Maths or Science qualifications at AS level. Applicants will need to demonstrate an interest in their chosen area, a willingness to accept challenges, the ability to represent the school, high levels of academic aspiration, an interest in leadership and a commitment to the programme.
