Entry to the Uniformed Services Level 1 Diploma at Highbury College

Course description

This programme is designed for those who wish to enter a specialist area of employment within the Sport, Fitness and Leisure and Public Service industry or to progress to Level 2 study in Exercise, Health and Fitness Instructing or Public Services.

Course content

This is a work-related programme that includes a combination of practical and theoretical units including:

  • Health and Safety;
  • Active Healthy Living;
  • Team work;
  • Developing self-discipline;
  • Participate in adventurous activities;
  • Participate in competitive sports;
  • Volunteering;
  • Map reading and navigation.

Entry requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs A*-E including English and Maths (or equivalent qualifications) and a genuine interest in working within sport, leisure or uniformed services.


Most practical lessons will be based in the College's new Sports Centre. Assessment will focus on the following:

  • Written assignments;
  • Test of knowledge;
  • Practical demonstration.

All units will be assessed by your tutor.

Future opportunities

The Level 1 Diploma in Sport and Uniformed Services is designed to prepare you for employment in organisations such as sports centres, leisure centres and public services and provides a good grounding to go on to study more advanced programmes such as the Level 2 Diploma in Exercise, Health and Fitness Instructing or Public Services, or an Apprenticeship at Level 2.

Alternatively you could move on to employment.
