Computer Science Level 3 Extended Diploma at Southport College

Course description

A BTEC Level 3 Diploma is a computer science work related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. As well as learning about computers and their uses in industry, you will develop the computer science skills required by the computing industry.

Course content

You will be expected to complete 18 units and in addition to the course's full-time hours, you will also be expected to undertake approximately 10 hours of independent study every week. You will study a range of subject areas, including: 
• IT systems analysis and design 
• Digital graphics and computers 
• Human computer interaction 
• IT troubleshooting and repair 
• Principles of computer networks 
• Organisational systems security 
In the second year of the programme there will be short work placements. You may also study for an additional qualification in a relevant subject. 
If you are between 16-18 years you will also study Functional Skills in maths, English and ICT. Functional Skills are recognised and valued by employers and universities. 

Entry requirements

• Minimum 5 GCSEs at A*- C including English and maths or Merit in a related Level 2 Diploma and C or above in English and maths
• Successful interview 
• Satisfactory reference 

Assessment

Extended Diploma in Computer Science Level 3 
You will be continuously assessed throughout the course through a series of assignments, applying theory, concepts and knowledge to realistic scenarios.

Future opportunities

You may progress on to HE courses such as: Computing, Networking, Website design or the Foundation Degree in New Media, which is offered here at Southport College. You may also progress to employment within the IT sector in roles such as network installation, maintenance and support.
