Electrical Installation Level 2 at Wiltshire College

Course description

This course is for students interested in a career in electrical installation. The course is equally divided into theory and practical sessions and is designed as a starting point for those seeking to become trained electricians. The course covers the electrical industries, science for electricians, health and safety (including accident prevention), wiring, circuits, cabling, inspecting and testing, and customer service skills.

Course content

Students will learn basic skills of electrical cable installation, bending conduit pipes (used as protection for cables), fitting a range of socket and switch outlets to a variety of materials and, lighting and power circuits.

Entry requirements

2 GCSEs at grade C or above, in Maths and English (or successful completion of a relevant subject at Level 1). You will also be required to pass a trade specific aptitude test, provide a good reference and have a satisfactory interview.


The course consists of five units, which are assessed by a mixture of assignments and on line multi choice exams. Units are as follows:

  • Health and safety in building services engineering
  • Principals of Electrical Science
  • Electrical Installations Technology
  • Installation of wiring systems and enclosures
  • Understanding how to communicate with others within building services engineering

The programme may ask you to undertake some work at home in preparation for the theory phase tests.

Future opportunities

Educational Progression

After successfully completing Level 2 you can progress onto the full time Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures)at Level 3. Or you could gain an apprenticeship and complete the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electro technical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment). Which on completion of the apprenticeship will enable you to register with the JIB as a qualified Installation Electrician.

Employment opportunities

This course is not a guarantee of full-time employment but could help you gain entry to an apprenticeship programme available in the electrical industry.
