Spanish AS/A level at Highbury Grove School

Course description

Studying Spanish at A-level provides an insight into another Spanish and Latin American culture and society. If you want to develop the knowledge and skills acquired at GCSE level in Spanish and to develop your experience of using these languages outside of school in a wide range of contexts the AS/A2 qualification offers you the enjoyment and motivation of improving your linguistic level.

Course content

The AS course covers four main areas, which are the media, popular culture, healthy living and family.  You will continue to develop Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills from GCSE in preparation for the Unit 1 and Unit 2 exams.

The A2 course covers three core areas which are the environment, a multi-cultural society and issues in society.  The other half of the course content is studying two cultural topics which can are all based in the target language-speaking country and can range from a period of 20th Century history, an author, a playwright or poet, to a director, architect, musician or painter. 

Entry requirements

6 A-C Grades at GCSE including English as well as a Grade B in Spanish.


100% examination. (AQA)

Unit 1 Listening, Reading, Writing 2hrs (taken in May of AS year)

Unit 2 Speaking 15mins (taken in May of AS year)

Unit 3 Listening, Reading, Writing 2.5hrs (taken in May of A2 year)

Unit 4 Speaking 15mins (taken in May of A2 year)

Future opportunities

These qualifications provide an excellent basis for further study within the fields of modern languages and also greatly enhance your employment prospect as well as facilitating foreign travel.
