Health & Social Care Level 3 at Itchen College

Course description

This is for students who are looking to go into a career which will involve working with people such as children, young people or the elderly. The course is offered as a double award.

This course is for you if... like caring for people and want to follow a career that requires you to go to university to be a teacher, nurse or social worker, among other careers.

Course content

Topics may include:

  • Promoting quality care
  • Health and safety in care settings
  • Interpersonal interaction and communication
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Social care and early years services
  • Professional development

The optional units draw from a much larger list of topics covering issues within the health and social care and education sector.

Work placements

Health & Social Care students have the valuable opportunity to put theory into practice through a series of mandatory work placements for one day each week enabling students to gain excellent ‘hands on’ experience.

Please note: students who take any Care course will be required to pay for a DBS (Disclosing and Barring Service) checks.

Entry requirements

Grades 9-4 in English and Maths, Science at grade A*-C and two or more GCSEs at grades A*-C.

Additional guidance is available at interview. 


By coursework and examination

Future opportunities

This qualification will allow you to apply to continue your studies at university, be it in teacher training, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy or social work.

In the past our students have progressed to a wide variety of destinations, for example:

  • Hospital management/human resource management in a health setting
  • Teaching (early years/primary)
  • Nursing
  • Occupational/physiotherapy
  • Social work

Further information

Students who study on this course benefit from our on-site nursery, giving them practical experience, as well as the ability to work in placements for one day each week to contribute to their studies. These work placements can range from schools, older client settings and working with children with learning difficulties in special schools.
