Core Mathematics at Cheam High School

Course description

Core maths is designed for students with GCSE mathematics at grade C or above. it is ideal for those who want to learn how to apply advanced mathematics in real contexts and will train you in analysing real life data. With the increased use of mathematical ideas and thinking in nearly all subjects at AS and A level, it is a course that has massive benefits for every student.

The course has the equivalent UCAS points to an AS level. However, it is taught over two years with the majority of the teaching being in Year 13. This subject is designed to be chosen as a fourth option and a hard working attitude is essential.

Course content

Module 1: Analysis of Data, Maths for Personal Finance and Estimation
In this module, the focus is on real world maths that will enable you to make quick, useful calculations in a real world context. This could be to do with how much national insurance you are paying or analysing the interest you are receiving by considering the rate of inflation and the compounding effect. This module is a toolkit for every student to help them with the maths all around them.

Module 2: Critical Path and Risk Analysis
In this module, you will learn how to schedule a complex project with many separate components so that you minimise the resources used. This method is used by almost all companies in the real world to maximise time efficiency on projects. You will also learn about how probability calculations can enable companies to manage risk. This will enable you to understand more about why you get quoted a particular price for your car insurance and why zero hours’ contracts are discussed so much.

Entry requirements

Assessment

Students are assessed by two examinations in the summer of their second year. These will each be 90 minutes long and will be preceded by preliminary material handed out at least a week before the exams.
