Art at Carshalton Boys Sports College

Course description

The aim of this course is to develop a broad range of practical art skills and concepts through sustained investigations into art movement, observational drawing and experimentations with materials. Pupils will gain a wider understanding of arts
movements through history and will visit galleries, museums and locations where
inspiration can be drawn from. The skills, knowledge and experience gained on
both the 2 year A Level course is designed to prepare students for higher education at art college or university.

Course content

The course is taught by two art teachers to give students a broad range of contextual knowledge and practical skills.

Component 1:
The Personal Investigation is taught over the 2 years. From September to December Year 12 students will be taught portraiture, still life, landscapes
and sculpture. They then begin a comprehensive study of their choice to complete
component 1, this component also includes a 1000 minimum written text.

In February of Year 13 pupils will begin Component 2, this is an externally set assignment, which is based on a starting point provided by the examination board.
This portfolio will culminate in a 15 hour practical examination in the art classroom under supervised conditions.

Entry requirements

Grade B in English Language, Grade B or  above  GCSE Art, Merit or above BTEC Art  with HOD  agreement.


60% is assessed by coursework
40% is practical examination
Range of methods include: Drawing, oil painting, printing, sculpture and lift drawing as well as practical investigations, contextual analysis, gallery visits and off site
practical workshops.
