Physical Education AS level at Malmesbury School

Course description

The course takes a multi-disciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry, with the focal point being the performer and the performance.  The course is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education.

This subject has four components of teaching and learning each examined by its associated unit assessment.

Course content

This qualification has 3 components:

Component 01: In component 01 you will learn about the application of anatomical and physiological knowledge to improve performance.

Component 02: In component 02 you will learn about psychological and socio-cultural themes in PE.

Component 03: This component is split into two areas;

a) the candidate’s practical performance in one activity.
b) the candidate’s ability to give an oral analysis of a practical performance.

A. Practical Performance - In this section you develop physical skills and are practically assessed in one activity from the exam board list.

B. Oral Analysis – Candidates will be expected to watch a live or recorded performance and critically evaluate the practical performance of another candidate.  Candidates will be expected to analyse strengths and weaknesses and create an action plan to improve a particular area of weakness.

Assessment

Component 01 –35% A/S mark

  • 1 ¼ hour written exam (70 marks)

Component 02 –35% A/S mark

  • 1 ¼ hour written exam (70 marks)

Component 03 –30% A/S mark

  • Practical   (60 marks)
  • 40 marks performance
  • 20 marks oral response
