Physical Education at Greenshaw High School

Course description

This is a practical and engaging course which has been designed to equip learners with a depth and breadth knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. This requires them to:

• Understand the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance.
• Understand how physiological and psychological state affects performance.
• Understand the role of technology in physical activity and sport.
• Perform effectively in different physical activities by developing skills and techniques and applying these within a game.
• Understand the contribution which physical activity and sport make to health, fitness and well-being.
• Understand the key socio-cultural influences which can affect people’s involvement in physical activity.

Course content

Component 1: Physiological factors affecting performance
– Applied anatomy and physiology
– Exercise physiology
– Biomechanics.
 
Component 2: Psychological factors affecting performance
– Skill acquisition
– Sports psychology.
 
Component 3: Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport
– Sport and society
– Contemporary issues in physical activity and sport.
 
Component 4: Performance in physical education
– Performance or coaching of an activity taken from an approved list set by the exam board.
– Evaluation and analysis of performance for improvement (EAPI)
- Speaking.

Assessment

70% is assessed via examination. There are three papers:
– 2 hour written paper on physiological factors (30%)
– 1 hour written paper on psychological factors (20%)
– 1 hour written paper on socio-cultural issues (20%)

30% is assessed on performance or coaching in one activity from an approved list.
30% is assessed on performance or coaching in one activity from an approved list.

Financial information

Grade B or higher in a science GCSE and actively engaged in sporting performance
or coaching at club level. Grade B or higher in GCSE PE.

Future opportunities

Health and fitness instructor, nutritionist, coaching assistant, PE teacher, coach, gym
instructor and sports scientist.
