Art & Design (Studio Art) AS level at Havering Sixth Form College

Course description

This is a broad, practical art course where you will explore ideas and processes in a range of 2 and 3 dimensional media while developing your own creative direction. Students create digital portfolios or can work with sketchbooks. It is taken over one year as an AS qualification.

Course content

This course provides wide ranging opportunities for those with an enthusiasm for visual art, and suits people with imagination, self discipline and an enquiring mind.

You can expect to:

  • Explore a variety of media and develop an ability to express observations and ideas in visual form
  • Participate in trips to galleries and work with professional artists.
  • Develop your analytical skills and knowledge of critical and contemporary issues in Art and Design

Entry requirements

One grade B and four grade Cs at GCSE; Grade C in GCSE Art and Design or equivalent (e.g. Textiles/Graphics/Photography). If you have not studied a creative subject at GCSE please come to Freshers/interview with a portfolio of at least 15 examples/images of creative work (e.g. drawing, painting, photography, graphics, textiles, 3D models/sculpture, film, animation or performance).

Financial information

Optional Cost

£20 - Students must purchase sketchbooks and art materials totalling a minimum of £20. Other potential costs depend on individual choices about the nature of the work produced

Future opportunities

Designed to complement other subjects but can provide students with a portfolio for progression to Foundation Diploma, degree level courses in creative subjects or into the world of work. Art can lead to a wide variety of careers in the creative sector including Advertising, Publishing, Graphic Design, Fashion and Textiles, Architecture and Theatre or Interior Design.
