Course description

If you are intending to follow a career in the media industries (television, journalism, film and radio) then an A level in Media Studies is an option you need to consider. AS Level Unit 1- Foundation Portfolio in Media. This is a coursework unit where you will produce two paired media products from a series of starting points. This process involves progression from a pre production exercise to a fully realised piece. The briefs offered are print and video. This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated. Unit 2- Key Media Concepts (TV, drama) This unit covers the two areas Textual analysis and Representation alongside Institutions and Audiences. In section A you will study television and drama. In section B you will study a specific media industry from a choice of film, music, newspapers or magazines. This unit is externally examined. A2 Level Unit 3- Advanced portfolio in Media. This is a coursework unit where you will engage with contemporary media technologies to produce a media portfolio. This will be created through a combination of two or more media. You will also be expected to present your research, planning and evaluation in two or more forms. This unit is internally assessed and externally moderated. Unit 4- Critical Perspectives in Media. This unit covers two areas of theoretical evaluation and production alongside a study of contemporary media issues. This unit is externally examined. Assessment You must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of media concepts, contexts and critical debates, using terms appropriate and clear written expression. Apply knowledge and understanding to show how meanings are created when analysing media products and evaluate your own work. Also demonstrate an ability to play and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills. Demonstrate an ability to undertake and use appropriate research.
