Psychology AS level at Ellesmere Port Catholic High School
Psychology is the science of the mind and behaviour. Through this course students learn how people behave in certain situations and why. Psychologists work with doctors, teachers, police and many other professional n the hope of changing or improving behaviour. It is for this reason that there are numerous job opportunities for Psychologists, as most jobs involve dealing with people.
Module 1 - Approaches in Psychology
Written Examination: 1 hour 15 minutes. (40% of total AS marks)
Assumptions, theory, therapies and evaluation of;
- The Biological Approach
- The Psychodynamic Approach
- The Behavioural Approach
- The Cognitive Approach
Module 2 - Core Studies and applied research methods
Written Examination: 1 hour 45 minutes. (60% of total AS marks)
Analysis of ten core studies from different areas of psychology, including those into conformity and obedience, detecting insanity and teaching chimpanzees how to use sign language.
Learning about how psychologists gather information through carrying out research into certain behaviours. Students will need to become familiar with research design and data analysis.
It is essential that candidates have a sound knowledge of both Science and Mathematics.
At AS Level, approaches involve biological content and research methods are based on analysing mathematical data and statistics.
- Private reading around the topics is essential.
- Good written communication skills are essential.
- All exams involve essay writing.
With Psychology you can enter any job or profession because you will gain an understanding of people.
