Mathematics AS & A2 Level at Leek High School
The AS / A2 Level course follows the Edexcel Modular specifications. Three modules are studied for AS level and a total of six for the full A level course. Each module consists of a written examination – there is no course work.
Three modules are studied during the course of the year. These are:
- Core Mathematics 1 (C1)
- Core Mathematics 2 (C1)
- An application module- Statistics 1 (S1)
The C1 module is examined in the January of the year of study and the other two in the June.
After completing the three modules outlined above for AS level, students study a further three modules, for the A2 qualification which are:
- Core Mathematics 3 (C3)
- Core Mathematics 4 (C4)
- An application module – Mechanics 1 (M1)
One of the modules is examined in the January and the other two in the June of the year of study.
An A2 or AS qualification in mathematics is very valuable as a supporting subject to many other courses, including the sciences, geography, information technology, psychology and business studies.
When studying pure mathematics at AS and A2 level, you will be extending your knowledge of such topics as algebra and trigonometry as well as learning some brand new ideas such as calculus. When you study mechanics, you will learn how to describe mathematically the motion of objects and how they respond to forces acting upon them. When you study statistics, you will learn how to analyse and summarise numerical data in order to arrive at conclusions about it. You will extend the range of probability problems that you started for GCSE by using the new mathematical techniques studied on the pure mathematics course.
You will need to have achieved a C grade or above at GCSE and preferably have taken the Higher level examination (although Intermediate candidates would need to learn some of the Higher level topics when starting the course).
