Biology A level at Cannock Chase High School

Course description

Biology plays an enormous role in our future as it increases our knowledge and understanding about the natural world in which we live. It helps us address issues of personal well-being and worldwide concerns such as the effect of climate change, threats to human health and maintaining sustainable and abundant food supplies.

Entry requirements

Science and Additional Science (B+) or GCSE Biology (B+), also grade B in GCSE Maths. A pass at AS level is required to enter the A2 course. 


Students will sit three examinations at the end of the two years.  These exams will test content, application and breadth of understanding of practical science and science in society. 

There is no coursework aspect to this qualification.  However, students will have to complete a selection of twelve specified practicals that they will get a separate pass/fail result from. These practicals will be referred to in question papers. 

Future opportunities

Biology is a very useful subject to study. It offers a fantastic range of opportunities such as careers in health care such as doctors, dentists, nurses, opticians , physiotherapists, pharmacists and other careers such as Environmental Management, Forensic Science Biomedical Science, Food Science to name but a few.
