Course description

The computer games industry has become one of the fastest growing forms of media entertainment. This work-related qualification is ideal for those interested in games technology and animation production. It will provide you with practical knowledge and experience, obtained by working through challenging briefs where you will explore up-to-the-minute technology. Throughout the course, you will develop an awareness of the games development industry, its professional practice, and how to keep abreast of market trends affecting the industry.

Course content

Understanding the Computer Games Industry
Develop your understanding of organisational structures and job roles in the games industry.

Research Techniques for the Media Industries
You will learn how to gather data about audiences and present the results of your research.

Critical Approaches to Media Products
Exploring the ways in which producers think about and target specific audiences and how media audiences respond.

2D and 3D Animation
You will plan and produce a 2D animation with soundtrack and then understand how to evaluate audience responses. Using industry-standard software, such as Maya and 3D Studio Max, you will plan and create 3D animations.

Computer Game Story Development
You will learn how to create dramatic tension and intricate storylines, generating a compelling and dramatic play experience.

Computer Games Development
Focus is on understanding the different types of computer games, planning and designing your own game, and developing and testing a game before creating documentation.

Entry requirements

  • Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths,
  • or
  • a BTEC Extended Certificate at Merit grade, as well as GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above,
  • or
  • relevant work experience.

Future opportunities

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Games Development can be used to gain employment in the vast field of media, digital creativity, and communications. You can also apply to study a Higher National Diploma or degree programme.
