Design and Technology A level at Walton High
Designed to teach fundamental aspects of product design in commercial practice. This course involves invention, challenge and learning through designing and making exciting three-dimensional products. Essential qualities required include an interest in design as well as materials and manufacturing, creativity and the ability to communicate design thinking graphically. Students are expected to develop strengths in traditional as well as cutting edge communication and manufacturing techniques. The course provides an ideal opportunity for those with academic and creative abilities to study them in a context that firmly makes the link between these two disciplines.
Unit PROD1—primarily based on knowledge and understanding of Materials and Components, this unit is a 2 hour written exam.
Unit PROD2—Students will submit a portfolio of design based coursework and associated manufactured outcomes.
Unit PROD3— based on a wide range of knowledge of commercial product design and manufacture. The written exam for this unit demands extended writing to assess students on their understanding of all elements of the course.
Unit PROD4—Students will submit evidence of a single and substantial designing and making activity. This will be in the form of a portfolio of design based coursework and the completed product.
8 GCSEs (A*-C) or above, including English Language and Maths. Grade C or above in GCSE Design Technology course. Students with strengths in the sciences are also encouraged to apply.
