Drama & Theatre Studies AS & A Level at Brine Leas School

Course description

An exploration of drama and theatre that allows you to analyse performances, take part in drama productions, as well as studying plays and playwrights. With plenty of opportunities to watch live theatre and to perform on the stage.

Course content

There are Two units for AS:

  • Exploration of drama and theatre (Unit 1): 
    The study of two text’s both written and practically with a review of live theatre/performance. 
  • Theatre Text in Performance (Unit 2): 
    A group performance of a published play directed by your teacher and an individual monologue or duologue. 

Two Units for A2: 

  • Exploration of Dramatic Performance (Unit 3): 
    A group performance that is either devised or scripted. All direction and organising of the piece comes from the students. 
  • Theatre Text in Context (Unit 4): 
    A written exam based on classic texts from a range of time periods.

Entry requirements

It is preferable students achieve Grade C or above at GCSE Level Performing Arts.


Unit 1 Exploration of Drama and Theatre

  • ​40% of AS Mark, Internally Assessed
  • 20% of total GCE,  Practical/ Portfolio

Unit 2 Theatre Text in Performance

  • 60% of AS Mark,  Externally Assessed
    30% of total GCE, Externally Assessed

Unit 3 Exploration of Dramatic Performance

  • 40% of AS Mark, Internally Assessed 
  • 20% of total GCE,  Practical/ Portfolio

Unit 4 Theatre Text in Context

  • 60% of AS Mark,  Externally Assessed
  • 30% of total GCE  Examination

Future opportunities

The natural progression for performers is acting school. This course is recognised as a perfect basis for most theatre schools. Drama and Theatre Studies is fully accepted by Further Education institutes as a full subject for matriculation.

There are lots of opportunities for employment, not just in the world of theatre, film and television but in many recreational areas, managerial posts, social services, teaching, and personnel; in fact in any employment when the skills of communication and the ability to work closely with other people are important.
