Are you thinking of a career in business, science or engineering or perhaps becoming a professional mathematician? If so, studying A level Mathematics is going to be essential in developing your knowledge to support your skill base and help you succeed. Often thought of as a supporting subject, the content of A level maths builds a strong foundation of techniques which you can apply in other subject areas. Your algebraic skills will need to be good and you will be expected to spend a substantial amount of time outside the classroom with independent study. You will spend two-thirds of your time studying core mathematics and one-third studying an applied module which will complement your other A level subjects and your career choice. So, if you thrive on solving problems, don’t mind spending ages on a question, then you’re are going to enjoy this subject.

Entry requirements

You will need at least a grade B from higher tier GCSE maths and a minimum of 4 other GCSEs at grade C or higher including English. You will also be assessed within the first week to test your algebraic skills.

Assessment

The award is 100% examination based. There will be three exams of equal weighting, each lasting 1.5 hours. You will be assessed throughout the year with end of topic tests, mock examinations and regular homework.

Future opportunities

Further Maths will broaden your knowledge and if you are thinking of reading Maths at university it’s vital. A maths qualification will be looked on favourably for any degree course you may progress to. If you are going straight into employment, jobs in finance and engineering will welcome the skills you will have achieved.
