Joinery Level 2 Apprenticeship at Wigan & Leigh College

Course description

Learners can access this course if they are employed within the construction trade. Learners will attend day release or two evenings per week and will also be assessed on site for the NVQ element of the apprenticeship framework. You can progress on to the higher Level 3 apprenticeship.

Course content

Learners will study a suite of qualifications that will lead to an apprenticeship certificate including:

Maths Level 1, English Level 1, NVQ Level 2 and Diploma Level 2.

Entry requirements

Entry will only be open to those learners that are employed. Learners will undertake an initial assessment/trade test and attend an interview.


Candidates will be assessed at work for the NVQ element of the framework at the College for the Diploma and functional skills elements. The assessment is a mix of theory tests, practical skills and portfolio building.

    • The College's Pagefield Centre is a purpose built facility to educate students, apprentices and tradespeople of the future.

      This state-of-the-art facility offers a range of Courses in Construction Crafts and Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering.

      Large workshops and training environments, together with the latest machinery, software and equipment allow our students to gain the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

      The Centre boasts an excellent reputation amongst a range of employers across the Wigan Borough which is exemplified by our students quickly progressing into the professional industry.

      Pagefield Centre is currently receiving a £1.4m development in top of the range facilities to add to its already impressive learning environment.

      The turning and milling workshops will soon have new and upgraded equipment, which will include the latest technology in fabrication and welding.

      There will also be a plasma cutting bed and a new thermodynamic and fluid mechanic laboratory.

      To complement this state of the art equipment, students will have access to the latest finite element analysis software, CAD / CAM, hydraulics and pneumatics software, enabling them to experience learning in a high-spec environment.
