Business and Marketing Level 3 at Sheffield College

Course description

This course is specifically designed to give you the skills and knowledge required by any business professional, and provide a specialist pathway towards a career in Marketing in the second year.

Carefully selected and planned units will develop your understanding of business, effective decision making, management and global perspectives; before moving into your specialism of Marketing and building expertise in this field.

Course content

Over the two-year programme, you will complete 12 units:

  • Creative Promotion
  • Market Research
  • Managing an Event
  • Visual Merchandising

A range of learning methods are used including practical assignments, discussions, presentations and the use of computer-based virtual learning environments. Through this you will develop a wide range of skills including, presentation skills, critical analysis, IT skills, team working and leadership skills.

You will also work on several live projects enabling you to apply what you learn in the classroom to real businesses.

Course enrichment activities include visits to local and national organisations, live projects for real businesses, and the opportunity to go to a business conference abroad (Business Live at EuroDisney).

To be successful on this course you will need a positive attitude, a lively and enquiring mind, a willingness to explore new ideas and a keen interest in Marketing.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at 4 - 9 / A*-C or acceptable alternatives including a minimum grade 4 in English Language and Maths.


The majority of your work will be assessed through coursework, although there are controlled assessments in exam conditions in some units.

Financial information

You will be expected to contribute towards the cost of trips and visits. You may be entitled to help with the cost of trips and visits and anything else you need to buy for your course from the College’s Learner Support Fund.



At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.

Free meals

If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.

Travel passes

Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Future opportunities

This course is the first major step on the path to a professional career in Marketing. Many students go on to study Marketing at university. Successfully completing your course also gives you the option to progress onto the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) professional body qualifications. This can lead towards becoming a “Chartered Marketer”. This option enables you to study whilst working in the field, and can be done at The Sheffield College.

You will learn from experienced, specialised and enthusiastic teachers with a range of academic and business work backgrounds. Colleagues in the business team hold Marketing and PR degrees and have industry experience in the field.

You will have access to up-to-date IT facilities and course resources on the college intranet which can be accessed at home.
