Foundation Skills in Vehicle Maintenance at East Sussex College Hastings

Course description

During this one-year course you will use your passion and interest in cars to develop a range of skills needed to work in the Motor Vehicle industry.

Course content

During the course you will focus on the practical and personal skills you’ll need to work in the Motor trade. You will learn in our dedicated garages and workshops at our Automotive Training Centre where the course will fit with your individual needs and experience to give you an introduction into how light vehicles work, the electrical systems used in light vehicles and how the maintenance of engines. You will also improve your English, maths, IT and employability skills, all of which are essential for starting your career in the automotive industry.

You will study topics including:

  • Light vehicle steering and suspension
  • Light vehicle braking
  • Engine maintenance
  • Motorcycle maintenance
  • Bicycle maintenance
  • Electrical systems
  • Vehicle valeting
  • Engineering skills
  • Employment skills
  • Maths & English
  • Health and safety

By the end of the course you will have learnt the skills needed to progress into a Level 2 course or an apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

Entry Certificate or 4 GCSE's (E-G) including Maths and English, initial assessment


You will be assessed through observation of your workshop activities and tasks, exams, and a portfolio of your work.

Financial information

There will be an additional cost of approximately £100 to purchase safety boots and black work trousers, and to cover the cost of a course trip.

Future opportunities

By the end of the course you will be ready to move onto a Level 1 course to further your skills and knowledge, or get yourself ready for a career in the industry.

With further training you may be able to explore a number of career opportunities in the motor industry such as becoming a trainee mechanic or working in vehicle valeting.

    • The Automotive Training Centre offers hands-on training and qualifications in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair. 

      The centre is located on the Northridge Industrial Estate, has IMI (Institute of Motor Industry) awards accreditation and approval to deliver various levels of Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair programs and Apprenticeships  at levels 2 and 3.
