English Language AS & A Level at Bebington High Sports College

Course description

A Level English Language enables you to develop your interest in language structure, creative writing, knowledge of spoken language and its uses in society. You will have the opportunity to analyse, research and create a variety of texts for different purposes. You will study the use of language in everyday life and gain an understanding of why we use different types for different purposes and audiences.

Course content

There are a total of four units in the course - two at AS and two at A2:

AS course consists of two units of work:

  • Unit 1: Categorising Texts The unit focuses on the introduction to the study of language- Spoken and written texts; language and power.
  • Unit 2: Creating Texts - Coursework Candidates produce writing in different genres and for different audiences and purposes.

A2 course consists of two units of work:

  • Unit 3: Developing Language The unit focuses on how children acquire language skills and how language has changed over time.
  • Unit 4: Investigating Language The coursework unit focuses on investigating an aspect of linguistics.

Entry requirements

Students will need at least a Grade C or above in GCSE English Language.


The first year will be assessed by one examination and two pieces of coursework. The second year will be assessed by one examination and one piece of coursework.

Future opportunities

Students who study English Language can progress to university or a wide variety of careers including journalism, law, teaching, media and business.

This subject is a highly popular and successful option where student achieve excellent results and feel supported throughout their course. The skills developed during this course are highly transferable.
