Network Rail Work Placement & BTEC Level 3 in Engineering at Wigan UTC

Course description

Wigan UTC has teamed up with Network Rail to offer students the chance to gain real work experience for two days per week over two years in a chosen are of:
  • Maintenance
  • Route Asset Management
  • Works Delivery

And the remaining three days per week you will attend Wigan UTC to complete a BTEC Level 3 in Engineering course (equivalent to 2 A Level).

You will gain invaluable on the job experience and Rail industry experience that will expose you to real life work situations that will help you to gain employment once you finish your studies.  

Our Engineering course allows students to prepare themselves for employment, an apprenticeship or university by gaining the relevant knowledge and skills needed to meet the needs of modern engineering industries.  They will learn about mechanical and electronic disciplines as well as the core units within the course:
Unit 1: Engineering Principles - External Exam
Unit 2: Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team – Internal Coursework
Unit 3: Engineering Product Design and Manufacture - External Exam 
Unit 4:  Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering – Internal Coursework 
Unit 5: A Specialist Engineering Project – Internal Coursework 
Unit 6:  Microcontroller Systems for Engineers – External Exam
Unit 7: Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems – Internal Coursework
Plus an exciting range of other units that will also have a number of practical activities that link to real life industrial situations.
There will be written, calculated work and practical investigation. Some assessments will take the form of a presentation. Some units will involve the fabrication of a product or the creation of a drawing. 
Other elements of Engineering that Wigan UTC offer are:
  • Engineering (Generic) - BTEC Level 3
  • Electrical/ Electronic Engineering - BTEC Level 3
  • Manufacturing Engineering - BTEC Level 3
  • Network Rail Engineering BTEC Level 3 & Work Placement 2 days per week
  • Engineering - BTEC Level 2



Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grades A*-C Including English & Maths 


5 GCSEs at points 8.5 - 4 Including English & Maths

Financial information

Funded if aged 16-19

Future opportunities

This pathway will give you real work experience which will help you gain employment when you finish your studies alongside gaining qualifications that are transferable in other Engineering employment.

Also you may be given an opportunity to apply for an Apprenticeship with Newtork Rail
