Performing Arts BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Scarborough Sixth Form College

Course description

Your choice of course in this area can be tailored to meet your skills and interests. You can choose to specialise in Acting or Musical Theatre (both 2 A level equivalent) if you wish, or you might want to study all aspects of performance and follow the Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (3 A level equivalent).

All students will study core blocks which will typically include; Performing to an audience, Drama improvisation, Principals of Acting, Rehearsing, Performing Arts Business, Performance Workshops, and Historical Context of Performance.

Course content

The specialist option blocks will follow a range of units typically including the following:


  • Contemporary Theatre Performance
  • Theatre in Education
  • Applying Acting Skills
  • Auditions for Actors
  • Devising Plays
  • Voice and The Actor

Musical Theatre

  • Developing Voice for the Actor
  • Musical Theatre Performance
  • Singing Skills for Actors and Dancers
  • Developing Movement
  • Variety Performance
  • Singing Techniques and Performance

Students following the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts (3 A level equivalent), will complete both the Acting and Musical Theatre units alongside the core blocks.

Entry requirements

In addition to the level 3 BTEC entry requirements, a keen interest and passion for performing arts are essential to succeed on this course.

Previous experience in acting, singing or dancing would be advantageous. Commitment and hard work is expected from all of our students who will be invited to a pre-course workshop in July before enrolment on the course can take place.


This course is 100% coursework You will learn and be assessed on the course by a series of practical assignments as well as some handwritten work. The course aims to be as hands-on as possible with opportunities to utilise and develop students’ talents. Team work is an essential part of the course as it would be in a real theatre environment. The majority of units are assessed internally by your tutors; some will be assessed by external examiners.
