A-Level Geography at Leeds West Academy

Course description

A-Level Geography balances traditional and contemporary approaches, dealing with engaging human and physical geographical subject content. Students are encouraged to reflect on why they think the way they do about an issue, as well as considering how others think; skills that are vital for citizens in the 21st Century. Students will gain a range of transferable skills such as research skills, data interpretation and ICT. Geography is a flexible, interdisciplinary subject which can lead to environmental careers such as estate management, environmental consultancy, conservation, and flood protection; additionally, the transferable skills honed would be beneficial for careers in business, law and finance.

Entry requirements

GCSE Geography at grade B or above. Students without GCSE Geography will be considered if they have gained a GCSE in English at grade 6 or above and Science at grade B or above.

    • Our fabulous new academy building opened in September 2011. At a cost of £30m it is the flagship school building in Leeds and a fantastic resource for not only LWA but the local community. Boasting innovative features throughout all subject areas, the building is an endorsement of our commitment to excellence for all our students.

Ofsted judged us to be a ''good school with outstanding leadership and management''.

At LWA we hold very simple values: that learning is our focus and our core business; that relationships should always be positive and based on mutual respect; and that standards in teaching, learning and behaviour should always be high. This means we have high expectations of everyone within our community.

We have a first-class building and amazing facilities as well as great opportunities to offer our young people. It is packed full of innovative and engaging activities designed to promote active learning. Wherever possible we want our students to learn in the most relevant environment which is why trips are so important to us.

We have extensive partnerships both within Leeds through the universities and colleges locally and beyond in our links with Russell Group universities.
