Government and Politics A level at St Peter's RC High School & Sixth Form Centre

Course description

From September 2017, we will begin our new 2 year A Level course in Government and Politics with AQA. This course will include: 

  • British Politics - including elections, political parties, the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister and parliament. 
  • American politics - including the role of the president, elections, pressure groups and the constitution. 
  • Political ideologies - including ideas such as Socialism, Conservatism, Feminism and Nationalism.

Entry requirements

The general requirement to enter St Peter's Sixth Form to study 3 A levels, is 5 GCSEs at grade C / level 4 or above including English and Mathematics. Equivalent qualifications will be taken into account.

Required for this course:

4 in English Language GCSE or a B in History GCSE.

Students are expected to have an interest in current affairs and be willing to take an active interest in the news around them.

Future opportunities

Politics is a well-respected A Level that continues to be one of the fastest growing degrees at university level. Politics students can go on to study Law, Journalism, International Relations or any number of joint honours subjects. A high percentage of our students go on to study Politics at university.

Further information

The Politics department runs a popular trip to London each year which includes a visit to the Houses of Parliament. In addition, we endeavour to welcome in outside speakers which have included a member of a pressure group, MPs and a member of the House of Lords.
