Further Mathematics OCR AS and A Level at Sir John Leman High School

Course description

Measured over time, Further Mathematics is the fastest growing A level subject in the UK. Entries for AS Further Mathematics have increased greatly over the past 12 years.

In light of this obvious demand, we are pleased that we have the expertise to offer this subject with an impressive track record of consistently excellent results. It is not possible to study A level Further Mathematics without also studying A level Mathematics.

If you have thrived on the grade 7, 8 and 9 topics at GCSE then you will enjoy developing your skills further.

Extended Learning:

Assessments based on actual AS/ A2 questions will be set at the end of each topic and marked with reference to the examination criteria.

In addition students will be expected to practise techniques to embed their knowledge and develop their understanding between lessons.

 

Course content

AS Level:

There are three Overarching Themes:

  • Mathematical argument, language and proof
  • Mathematical problem solving
  • Mathematical modelling

The Further Pure Mathematics half of the course is common to all Further Mathematics specifications and includes the study of complex numbers, matrices and further algebra and functions.

This is supplemented by four optional elements (Further Statistics, Further Mechanics, Discrete Mathematics and Additional Further Pure Mathematics) of which at least two must be studied.

The Overarching Themes are applied along with associated mathematical thinking and understanding across the whole of the subject content.

A Level:

The second year of the A level course will re-visit topics from the AS course, develop them further and examine them more rigorously.

A number of additional topics will be introduced including proof, further calculus, further vectors, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations. 

Entry requirements

  • Grade 7 GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

AS Level:

The AS level will be a linear course and the content will be assessed by examination at the end of Year 12.

A Level:

The course will be assessed by examinations at the end of year 13.

Future opportunities

If you hope to go on to read a degree that is rich in mathematics such as architecture, economics, engineering, computing, finance, mathematics, physics or statistics, a qualification in Further Mathematics gives your application an edge.

Further Mathematics is listed as a facilitating subject by the Russell Group of leading universities and many prestigious institutions make lower offers to those who study it.

    • The Sixth Form is a lively and vibrant place, which offers students a large number of opportunities to contribute to the whole school through extra-curricular activities and leadership. These include recreational Sport, Creative Writing, Young Enterprise, the annual RAG Week and the Sixth Form Council.

      The environment in the Sixth Form is one of challenge; students are encouraged to strive to reach their full potential. In safe and supportive surroundings, students are helped to develop, not just academically, but also emotionally and socially by dedicated Sixth Form staff including an Academic Mentor. Furthermore, our specialist Sixth Form facilities include a coffee shop and newly refurbished Sixth Form study area.
